Coca-Cola Europacific Partners & Waterplan: Managing Water Stewardship With Technology

Summary

Discover how one of the world’s leading beverage companies leverages AI to manage their water stewardship strategy through one centralized platform. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) partnered with Waterplan to consolidate all their project data to manage, validate and measure impact.

Before Waterplan

Renowned for producing, distributing, and selling iconic beverage brands like Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Fanta, CCEP recognizes the critical role of water in its operations and has set ambitious water stewardship goals: to return 100% of the water used in its products to ecosystems and communities, regenerate 100% of the water used in key locations to be suitable for reuse by 2030 and reduce by 10% its water use ratio versus their 2019 uses.

As CCEP invests in and manages multiple water stewardship projects, they partnered with Waterplan to standardize all relevant information to their project portfolio, fostering collaboration, ongoing analysis and target tracking for over 50 locations, all in one platform.

The partnership is ongoing and addresses the following challenges

  • Centralizing Project Data: Each water stewardship project demands diverse local data, such as project type, timeline, costs, and stakeholder involvement. Collecting and standardizing this evidence-based information is critical but highly time-intensive.

  • Water Stewardship Project Management: Coordinating across internal teams (e.g., sustainability, legal, operations) and external stakeholders (e.g., governments, auditors) is vital for project success but requires significant time and effort.

  • Tracking Progress Against Targets: Aligning project outcomes with sustainability goals ensures strategy success and secures funding. However, without standardized systems, tracking and reporting can become complex and challenging.

“In the last year with Waterplan, we have made much faster progress than we would have with a business-as-usual approach. Their platform, data, and team are excellent.Francesca O’Hanlon, Senior Manager of Water at CCEP.

Centralizing Local Project Data at Scale

Waterplan’s platform collects, validates, and centralizes a wide range of project data, ensuring all relevant information about CCEP’s water project portfolio is standardized and stored in one place. Data includes:

  • Project Basic Information: Location coordinates, priority basin, source watershed, project size area, shared water challenges, co-benefits, funding partners, implementation partners, project category, activity, etc.

  • Project Progress Details: Each project has a dashboard that includes information such as the projected cost, the total project budget allocated, the volumetric water benefits (VWB) calculation method used, the VWB indicator, the proportion of VWB attributed to the company’s investment, and the VWB mathematical calculations.

  • Individual Project and Portfolio Impact: Including the annual water restored through active projects and the total anticipated volume of water to be restored by target date and project cost.

This information can be exported in various formats, streamlining decision-making and reporting processes while ensuring consistency and transparency in how information is presented.

Managing Water Projects

CCEP manages over 50 water replenishment projects using Waterplan’s platform, within which they can track progress, impact, and costs. The platform fosters collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders, streamlining project updates, adjustments, and allowing for data-driven decision-making.

With Waterplan’s platform and data, CCEP can strategically prioritize project investments based on factors such as estimated costs, budgets, anticipated Volumetric Water Benefits (VWB), and the number of active or completed projects in priority locations.

As projects progress, CCEP gains access to regularly updated insights on their estimated duration and costs, ensuring transparency and supporting effective monitoring and reporting. Furthermore, Waterplan’s network of vetted implementation partners connects CCEP with the right collaborators with open for funding opportunities in project locations, ensuring efficient execution and driving impact.

Tracking & Reporting Progress Against Water Targets

CCEP can monitor progress toward their replenishment targets in near-real time, with visibility into each project’s individual contribution to those targets, which is measured in volumetric water benefits. The platform includes an activity log that records data updates and edits, ensuring transparency in how progress is documented. By consolidating performance metrics and project details, CCEP gains a comprehensive view of its initiatives, enabling efficient resource allocation to achieve its goals while streamlining reporting

Takeaways

This case study highlights how CCEP uses technology to enhance its water stewardship efforts, streamlining project management, improving data transparency, and enabling informed decision-making. With a centralized system that standardizes and validates water data, CCEP has established an industry benchmark for effective water project management. By aligning local initiatives with global sustainability objectives, CCEP is making a significant, measurable impact on water stewardship.
